Cleaning of Vitrified Clay Pipe

October 6, 2022 @ 11:30 am - 1:15 pm

Presented by Kent Carlson, Vice President of the National Clay Pipe Institute.

In the first 118 years of ASTM standards for VCP, many technical standards were developed that covered all aspects of manufacturing, quality control, testing, installation, jointing, bearing strength, chemical resistance, and field acceptance testing. Many of these standards were industry firsts in the sewer pipe field.

In December of 2021, ASTM International published the first international standard ever to specify accepted practices for cleaning Vitrified Clay Pipe (VCP) by OSHA, DOT, CDC, and EPA standards (including CMOM specifications).  This industry-first standard requires returning a cleaned pipe to at least 95% of its original design capacity.

ASTM C1920-21 is now being adopted as the standard for cleaning pipes by many Municipal and Governmental agencies. The in-person presentation by Kent Carlson will cover an overview of ASTM C1920-21 and how it can benefit the operational and EPA CMOM permit requirements of municipal sewer collection departments.
